A Kingdom of Grass
Blackbuck National Park is a repository of rich and rustic biodiversity with a unique grassland ecosystem. The park lies between two rivers that flow into the Gulf of Khambhat, expanding into custard, dusty-colored fields that create a utopian landscape for visitors.
The primary attraction is its preservation of the rare Blackbuck. You can witness these beautiful antelopes, with their spiraling horns, moving gracefully through the golden grass in all their glory.
History & Heritage
In earlier times, these grasslands (Vidi) belonged to the Maharaja of Bhavnagar and were used for hunting with renowned cheetahs. Recognizing the unique ecological value of this land, it was established as a sanctuary in July 1976.
Initially a protected area of 18 sq km, it expanded in 1980 to its current size of 34.08 sq km. Today, it stands as one of the few places in India where one can view the classic savannah ecosystem.
